SAIN_January. Cervical Cancer Awareness month. BEhealthy. 1400

We are halfway through the first month of the year. This means we are still trying to finish our list of resolutions and build the courage to actually do them. Many list “being healthy”, “exercise more” or “a healthier diet” as their main plans for the year. They’re all great things to list, BUT it tends to be a little overwhelming to start all of them at the same time. We believe starting slow, with small tweaks to our daily routines will help make our resolutions seem more feasible.

“Being healthy” is an easy thing to accomplish and has enormous benefits. Aside from helping us be more active and have a healthy weight, it gives us a stronger immune system, which means less sick days.

January is cervical cancer awareness month and as most of us know, there are many risk factors that can be avoided or controlled to prevent this disease. One of them is having a weak immune system. It may not be the biggest risk factor associated with this type of cancer, but it definitely affects our overall well-being and our strength to fight cancer.

Below are a few ways to reset our autoimmune system:

  1. Don’t smoke (this is a resolution on it’s own).
  2. If quitting cold turkey is too difficult, try to quit gradually.
  3. Try to slowly incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet.
  4. If you can’t put aside 30 minutes a day for exercise, try to walk around the office, park your car far away from the store, use the stairs, or walk while talking on your phone.
  5. Aim for 8 hours of sleep every night.
  6. Ask your doctor what your BMI is and what it should be. Are you close?
  7. Control your blood pressure.
  8. The cleaner the better = less infections.
    • Wash your hands frequently.
    • Cook meats thoroughly.
  9. Use this time to schedule your yearly medical screening.
    • HPV testing is crucial in preventing/controlling cervical cancer.
